Thanksgiving

Or American Thanksgiving

So many stories abound

the sound of guns fired around

about the first Thanksgiving

all the foods that were given

what state was known to have started it

why it starts and who wants to quit

was it church-related or not

what was the purpose I sought

only to come up with naught

Native Americans or not

~~

Who cooked the meal was not clear

death due to illness and disease I hear

Then what was eaten, said some — turkey only

After the deaths, it sounded very lonely

Then there was where it was held

There were disagreements, some that rebelled

Plymouth Rock, Florida, Puritans when landing

or the Separatists, where they were standing

was the first Thanksgiving the Greeks, Egyptians

or was it the Romans, or Native Americans?

~~

We went to our daughter's house, who lives close by

I spoke with her brothers and was to say hi

There were only 5 grandchildren

and two great-grandchildren

with one on the phone today

It was a fun and relaxing day

We ate and ate and played cards too

there was too much snow and cold to

go outdoors. It was an okay time

I needed to get home to finish this rhyme.

This poem made me think about how unfair is history written by the "winners." Thankful for your perspective, Denise.
