Text Message Tango

I type “Hey!” and erase it twice,

settle for “What’s up?”—

my thumbs doing the tango

with nerves and second guesses.

You reply with a meme,

and suddenly my day

is ten shades brighter.

I send a smiley face,

you send back a wink—

we’re both tiptoeing around

what we really want to say.

If texting were a dance,

we’d be champions—

sidestepping feelings,

twirling around truths,

hoping one of us

will finally step forward.

Until then,

I’ll keep spinning

in this little waltz of words,

loving every clumsy,

adorable misstep.
