Teeth

A poem for the animal in each of us

Have you ever just... watched someone eat?

It's not such a pretty thing.

Infact, it scares the hell outta me

Cuz if you look closely while someone feeds

You'll see there's a primal beast lurking

Just below our humanity

It's really easiest to see

When the subject of your study is three

Seriously, if you wanna see what I mean

Just give a toddler a piece of string cheese

And watch them gnaw it apart with such predatory glee

You'll see bits and scraps torn away violently

As proof of humankind's wolfish gluttony

Shreds will dangle from the toddler's mouth, you'll see

Like the guts of a tiger's prey, out on some prairie

In a gory wildlife documentary

And when the toddler smiles, that smile will be

The baby-toothed victory grin of the hungriest shark in the sea
