Tears and Smiles in the Same World
The Duality of Life

Tears and Smiles in the Same World
Love is both peace and battle;
It is a branch of roses — yet also a sword.
The nature of love is proud and self-respecting,
Yet on the other side, the beloved is delicate and sensitive.
These mischiefs (fitne) that make the whole world weep,
Are the very things that keep the marketplace alive.
All things lie hidden within the human being,
But the realization of this truth is painfully hard.
This very world is a town of tears,
And yet this same world holds the secret smile.
Theme
This couplet explores the duality of life, showing how the same world that is full of sorrow and tears also holds hidden joy and quiet smiles — emphasizing the bittersweet nature of human experience.
