Teal – the Colour of Peace & Balance (to me)

As a kid my parents let me try a bunch of different team sports. One of the first was soccer where I was a proud member of the Teal Tornadoes. We were named for the beautiful, reflective jerseys we got. I remember seeing that colour and needing to know everything about it. It became my favourite colour right there and then. With the name of the colour now in my vocabulary and the love of it well secured, I started noticing it everywhere – as it was the perfect blend of green and blue. It was the colour of the community pool, it blended with grays on a stormy day, it could be found in the water of the mountain lakes and prominent in a lot of my cartoons.

But why? Why do I love it? Why is it the first colour I choose whenever I see an online colour picker? Why is it what I painted my childhood room walls with?

It’s peaceful. There is calm to it. There is a balance to it. It is neither green nor blue. It is both. It brings with it the soothing blue of lapping waves and stormy skies. It has the immortal comfort of the leaves and mosses. It takes stress and gives balance in return.
