Tattoo Time
A Georgia peach is all I have right now by my elbow
Several years ago now, my niece talked me into getting a Georgia peach tattoo with my daughter and my grandson's fiancee. At the time, it was a tough decision. We were going to Georgia for my grandson's graduation from basic training and to celebrate his marriage to his high school sweetheart.
The difficulty for me was having learned early in my counseling career that tattoos were prevalent among sexual abuse victims. And I saw a lot of that. But then again, I saw trauma victims of all sorts, including sexual assault victims who were not all tatted up.
I am a sexual assault survivor
and now I say I'm a thriver.
I'm considering a new tatt
It doesn't have to be all that
I compromised on the peach
making it out of reach
Tiny and dark, no color
But just right to cover
My acanthosis nigricans
When my blood sugar stains
My skin from measuring
too high. It is reassurring
to see my tattoo do that
a sample I can show at
training, you know.
Time to get a tatt? Let's go.

Those new tattoos that show glucose levels are so awesome. I think those would be the ones I'd want Or one that says I have a pacer/defib so the EMTs can see it before they shock me with paddles. Loved your poem, Denise.
I love this very real life poem, thankyou for sharing xx
I'm a collector of tattoos with reminders. This is such a good one! It can be so easy to give away our own power and feel depressed, when from another perspective clearly we are thriving and evolving.
