The summer sun shone warm upon my skin.
Cicadas sang in thousands to the sky.
And though I was unworldly, fifteen then,
I saw the message in her hazel eyes.
She’d wet her skin and hair against the heat,
While watering the plants beside her place.
I closed the space between us, unsure feet,
And in my trembling hands I took her face.
Our lips met, and then opened, summer fire,
The world stood still for lovers unashamed.
Her kiss burned with an undisguised desire,
into my heart to boldly call her name.
Thirty years past, yet I must pause for breath,
Recalling that first kiss…Elizabeth.
