A Summer Night Sonnet

Those nights I could feel summer in my toes,

Curled in dew, roots drinking in simple things

Drunk on water like wine before we chose

To ask for proof of everything unseen.

Humid summer breath teased flushed freckled skin,

Sticking floral cotton to skinny thighs.

Cold drops mist on blades of grass, breathed in

The sweat kissed air gave scent to cobalt skies.

Lemon ice filmed tongue caught against my teeth,

Dripped sticky syrup on my toes crushing

Cadmium hibiscus petals underneath

The fluorescent lamps pull, moths orbiting.

Those nights joy was a tangible thing caught,

Alit wings, luminescent kilowatt.
