A short story

The island of Kauai is all Talula has known

The water that is endless and earth overgrown

Her father is by her side, he’s all she’s got left

On the east end of the island, left bereft.

If only the earth had warned them of the danger that lies ahead

This story would be non-existent, it would remain unsaid.

Talula and her father decide to surf far out

As the day seemed beautiful, there was no doubt

There’s no better way of spending a day in Kauai

Her and her father watching the time fly by

Just as their home called them in, the waves pulled back

Ready to pounce, ready to attack

There was no way of turning back, it was now too close

The wave quickly swallows them, but time begins to slow

As time is walking by, Talula keeps on moving

Being pushed and pulled by the oceans choosing

Her breath becomes non-existent

Her body becomes non-resistant

Her body becomes heavy

Sinking and falling already

It’s like weights were put on her chest

Slightly curled up like a bird in their nest

The ocean becomes hers

And her pain quickly clears

Although her time here is up, there’s still hope

Her new life is waiting, a new life to cope

While still trapped in the waves a person appears

Though short and lively he takes away Talula’s fears

He reaches out his hand in a kind of proposal

She takes it in wonder, no thought of disposal

Their hands touched and both are transported

Vision and feelings become contorted

They land on the sand of a beach

Logic seems far out of reach

“I’m Kahu, this is your new life”

“you’re safe now, I’ve got you, away from any strife”

“I’ve got something to show you, I know it’s what you need”

Talula stood up and cautiously agreed

They walk along the sand and a house comes into view

Kahu looks up at Talula “all this is for you”

The house is enchanting, populated with grace

Large and seamless, like an endless space

The trees near grow tall

You can hear the birds softly call

The walls are held hostage by an engulfment of vines

Wrapped around a thousand times

“Is this a dream? Am I really here?”

She looks up at the building, the second tier

There were her parents’ hand in hand

She finally realized, she began to understand

Reunited in this new world

She runs towards her dreams, instantly furled

The arms of her parents wrapped around her, secure

The warmth of their hearts a dearly missed allure.

This isn’t the end of her story, there’s more to be said

Her beautiful soul, her kind spirit, isn’t dead

Just like before, the water is perfect to surf

The ocean, rough or glassy is their turf

So just like before, they surf far out

They embrace the beauty while they scout

The sunset, the captivating sight, never ages

Never less beautiful through historic pages

Nostalgia strikes them like a bolt of lightening

This new life, new way of life, is enlightening

The earth feels new, rebirth

This is what her family is worth

As the sun sets and the sky becomes gloomy

This world, this earth, feels roomy

Dreams and hopes became bright

And even the darkest times, turned out alright
