Take a closer look
A poem about an up-close encounter at the Eifel Tower
By Cheryl E PrestonPublished 3 years ago • 1 min read

While the tower above shines bright
Beneath it is a hidden blight
Vomit and urine soak the ground
Beer bottle tops and trash are strewn around
Half naked bodies sleep in the dirt
Some have bruises where they have been hurt
The homeless sit in a daze
The pain of hunger on each face

Drug paraphernalia the scent of beer
Alcohol breath it’s all so near
Welcome to the city of love
Where the Eifel tower hovers above
Beyond the glitz and glitter
Is degradation hopelessness and litter
This too is Paris France
The world capital of romance
A closer look allows you to see
This darker side of Gay Paree
