Sleepless Nights and Autumn Roads
Haiku can transform heightened moments into existential insights. Richard Wright, the renowned African American novelist, turned to haiku later in his life and produced startling haiku while battling dysentery. Written in the final year of his life, Wright's haiku in The Last Poems of an American Icon show a perspective shift, blending natural imagery with introspective thoughts to reveal perceptions about time, longing, solitude, and the natural world. In haiku, such as "A Sleepless Spring Night" and "Autumn Moonlight," Wright takes simple scenes from nature and everyday life to unveil observations from the perspective of a dying man embracing life's end. Through thoughtful structural choices, Wright uses haiku's brevity to link the physical world with the emotional and spiritual realms.

Not everyone can be trusted
When my friend and I were 12 years old, we went on a 5-day school trip to Switzerland with our class. We were introduced to the trip leaders, a group of 5 people - 1 girl and 4 boys. They all seemed nice except for one of the boys, who I'll call Nathan. I had an uneasy feeling about Nathan from the start, though my friend dismissed my concerns, saying I tend to have trust issues.

Forgotten family house
The family had a long-forgotten house deep in the countryside that once belonged to our now deceased cousin. It was located deep in the woods, at least an hour's drive from the main road. When my parents decided to visit and see what shape it was in, they packed up the car with me, my little brother, and another cousin and made the long drive out.

The time my sis and I saw aliens
When I was about 8-10 years old (I don't remember exactly), my sister and I were at a family party hosted by my uncle's parents. Being Mexican, our parties typically involved lots of relatives, their kids, and random friends, so there were probably 20-25 people there. The party was in my uncle's parents' driveway and front yard, with tables of food in the driveway and kids playing in the front yard where there was a bouncy house.
