Sparrows play
Hide and seek
Bird games
Only they know the rules
Comedic flitting
Rattles rich violet
Delphinium blossoms
Hesitant hydrangea
Slowly reviving
Half-hearted blooms
Tentatively unfold
Building confidence
Under my leadership
Zucchini swells
Faster than
I can grill it
Onion stalks flop
Softening their reach
As their bell base widens
Beanstalks have wound
Tightly; stunting
Unfortunate corn
Raspberries are vibrant
Plump garnets plummet
If I’m not quick
To consume them
Straight from
Thorny scaffolding
Profusion of beauty
Enfolded in my care
As living things
Stretch up
And sink gracefully
Under the weight
Of abundance
I used to hate this
Being responsible
I was a free spirit
Forever choosing to
Swim naked
Under the stars
Over a pay check
It’s amusing how
A garden becomes
Your friend
When I let the clover
Grow a little too long
The bees throw a party
Everything gets
A little wild
At dusk
This patch
Has become
An extension of
My own wildness
I am still
A free spirit
Though I pay bills
On time
Go to school
Run a business
Sometimes it still feels
Like a prison
When those boulders
Roll around
I escape to
Backcountry meadows
Sleep under
A canopy of stars
Yet I always
Come home
To water
The garden
About the Creator
Aspen Marie
In love with life and all of its foibles.
