Sweet and Salty
a summer sonnet

Our hands sticky from melted popsicles,
but you held mine anyways as we walked.
“Shall I compare thee…” you started to say.
My face turned red, and I pushed you away.
We walked alongside the beach umbrellas,
water at our feet, and sand in our toes.
My sun-kissed cheeks matching your sun-burnt nose.
The water was cool; we stopped for a swim.
Bathed in the Atlantic Ocean and sand,
Waves threw us sideways; you still held my hand.
You kissed me slow with lips sweet and salty.
Waves were rough, but you carried me softly.
I’ll think back to this day of just us two,
because it’s the day I fell in love with you.
