Swallow Me Whole

You come in waves.

You take my confidence, my balance and my strength.

You start as a dull ache that I can’t relieve and grow

until

you swallow me whole.

You remind me of what was and will never be.

You steal my color and make it gray.

Potential success becomes inevitable failure.

Peace remains elusive and you swallow me whole.

Dark corners of my mind grow to chasms and I stand on the edge.

The edge creeps closer and pulls my focus.

That edge is my nemesis.

I strain to look away less you swallow me whole.
