Suspension of Disbelief

Surprised by the majority

My windshield wipers just stuttered

And I thought that was strange

They stopped mid swipe

then I looked around

and saw

Cold drops of rain hung suspended in the air

My car was paralyzed, stuck in clear amber

The others around me revved and shimmered, but they too were utterly still

Then everything snapped back to speed

And we were all flying down the road

Tunneling under a weeping grey sky

The road whipped by below

And I was left shouldering the icy notion

That all this life

All this motion

Had to be a bad simulation

My hands grew heavy on the wheel

And

I wondered if steering even made a difference

And

I looked to the left and saw a few others

They seemed lost like me

Then I turned my head to the right,

And saw the majority, barreling down this strange and dangerous road

With their vacant eyes and empty smiles

Authors note:

I’m in of a bit of shock, to hear that trump won the popular vote by such a crushing margin.

I’m not really surprised to see him win the electoral college— but seeing him take the hearts and minds of more than half of voters… is…

It just doesn’t feel real.

I know, on a conscious level, that there are bad people who see him for what he is and still like him. I know on a conscious level that there are deluded or blindly optimistic people who eat his lies and believe he’s not as wretched and malignant as he truly is.

But I also know that he truly is repugnant. He always has been, and every time he reveals another layer of his hideous moral bankruptcy, people in his camp continue to accept him.

What will it take for people to reject trump?

His racism didn’t kill the worship.

His sexism didn’t kill the worship.

His criminal convictions didn’t kill the worship.

His campaigning against science and climate change denial didn’t kill the worship.

His antagonistic approach and clear disdain for the poor didn’t kill the worship.

His inciting violence and pushing insurrection didn’t kill the worship.

His constant, blatant dishonesty didn’t kill the worship.

And somehow, the people who excuse (or celebrate) him outnumber the people who have are repulsed by him.

Society feels unbelievable.

How can so many people buy into trump? He’s the human embodiment of a deadly scam.
