Sunrise on a Soul

A Poem

By John HowlandPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

From the long night awake.

From the depths of slumber,

forth calls first lessening

of cold lit stars’ number.

From the gaze set by hope,

from the time long given,

forth rises the lost song

of life’s light now riven.

The keening reach

of skies to clear

falls warmly on

a soul held near.

The weight now flees,

each breath gains might.

The rust recedes,

each step gives height.

Once for remembrance

of a price now paid,

once for sacrifice

of a life re-made.

Forged fire calls flame

long silent from sleep:

Arise, stand and heed!

Soak the heat and reap.

As night-blind eyes adjust

to blinding break of day,

and ears recall the sound

of echoed trumpets’ play,

the joy breaks tears long kept in toll,

and sounds the sunrise on a soul.
