Sugar Paper Harvest

Inspiration, motivation, self-reflection, poem using Poppy's Prompts and for The August Harvest: A Mikeydred August Dollar Prompt for All Vocal Creators

By Paul StewartPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

Nobility and necessity in this, our calling

struggling for the words to say,

the way to say what you want to say

/scratch that/what you need to say?

until you bleed, cry, scream,

shout, laugh, all of the above

until your hand/voice gives out,

whether cursive, block script,

typing or even speech to text

until you reach a conclusion...

whether half-baked, thought-provoker

fully argued, developed,

sensible or senseless conclusion

we have this gift for words,

diction, flow, arcs

form, order, chaos

-

Sugar sweet on my tongue, crystals on my palm

words that come forth and leave their nest

my origami heart unfolds, we never play fair

consistently dismissive, critical, cynical

trapped we become, entwined, like a fly, baited

as scribbles on paper, wasted opportunities

my origami heart reformed, will never be sated

so still I fight against the critic as we must

#

if you don't write, either no-one

will write your thoughts

or someone will happen upon

your greatest/worst ideas

write them, get credit

fame, infamy like

Shakespeare, Chaucer

Mozart, Beethoven

Van Gogh, Caravaggio

Picasso, Bosch

were nothing

until they became something

-

write because you love it

but also because you hate it

to clear your conscience,

untidy mind, aching heart

write just write

we reap what we sow

#

fly high, what we reap we sow

you should know that by now

sugar paper in my palm, sweet

fly paper in my hand, bitter

-

fly paper scribbles, etches

sugar paper, your magnus opus

power in your palm, dormant

release it and let it fly

#

The harvest brings with it food

hope and a sense of renewal

writing takes a toll on us all

a refresh a renewal is necessary

don't stop completely, don't give

in or out, up or it such a wide berth

-

Sugar paper, fly paper origami

sugar play, fair play, origin

sugar origami, paper aeroplane

fly high, what we reap we sow

This is incredible. Clever, relatable and evocative. "write because you love it but also because you hate it" was my personal favourite part.

  • 🤩 Wow! Another full on poem including prompts & a challenge… do you ever rest?🤔Favourite lines: “ if you don't write, either no-one will write your thoughts or someone will happen upon your greatest/worst ideas write them, get credit fame, infamy like”✅

Love how you incorporated both prompts into this piece!! Flowed so well! Loved “to clear your conscience, untidy mind, aching heart”

This was an interesting insight into the working of your very creative mind Paul!! The stanza that starts with "write because you love it" really landed well with me. I loved it all but that one had a little extra for me! Great work!

I love how this feels both stitched together, as language is, and flowing, as language is.

Could this be the essence of writing? Great work.

My origami heart unfolds - I love that! Write because you love it, and also because you hate it - that's what I said! ☺
