Streetlight Gloom

A Poem on Loss

It was different, something was off. Not the streetlights, they beamed as always changing colour every other minute.

Just, the image of you standing on the other side. I could see it, slowly painting into my reality. The shallow breaths you took, sinking into the air every second, becoming heavy on my shoulders. I couldn't see your smile, or make out the sound of your voice.

We both stood there, waiting silently for the streetlights to change colour.

Cars zoomed by as usual, becoming a quick blur as they dashed down the road. My heart was racing, I could feel the time slipping by every breath you took.

I just wanted to see you smile, or hold you hand. I wanted to remind how everything was going to be okay, and that you'd be safe.

The light turned green, and the colours of the world faded away.

A scream that shattered my heart, but was so silent to the rest of the world.

Your footsteps came closer, and closer.

I finally saw you, and clenched your hand tightly.

But you fell out of my grasp. The green light shimmered in your eyes, reflecting your eyes.

And you slowly walked away, reaching the other side and fading away from my sight.

The streetlights turned red, and time stopped.

I had lost you in the blink of an eye, dreading gloom across the street.

Streetlight Gloom, I hated it.

"Maybe i'll see you on the other side?"..
