Stampede of the Desert

A Poetry Exercise

The rain gathers in a stampede of clouds

Threatening to open and drench the desert

The parched dust thirsts for it,

But it’s a tease

My skin feels it before it hits

The conductive thickness of the air

Coating my arms and legs

With ions and atoms, waiting

The cloud stampede runs

Moving along the upper wind

Denying those on the surface

The pleasure of it’s caress

Purple, gold, pink, broken by

Saguaro sihuettes

The sun leaving only remnants

Of it’s magic reflected

A flash.

A splatter of light

One, two, three

The rumble follows

Flash, rumble,

Flash, rumble

The night air thinned

Until the stampede scatters,

Transforms, and

Cool drops fall

Drenching the sand

Bathing the cacti

The desert finally

Releasing its breath

In a downpour

The sound of the stampede

As it hits the ground
