Sow the Seeds of Greatness

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 3 hours ago 2 min read

Verse 1

Water and sow the seeds of greatness

Don’t starve the little sprouts of tomorrow

But I was raised in a house where tenderness

Was a language no one spoke

Told I wasn’t pretty enough

Wasn’t smart enough

Wasn’t wanted enough

Wasn’t worth the breath it took to name me

Always told what I was not

Never told what I was

And the silence grew around me

Like weeds choking out the sun

Chorus

But I’m digging through the ashes now

Trying to find what still can grow

Watering the roots they tried to kill

In the dark where no one goes

Water and sow the seeds of greatness

Even when the soil is cold

I won’t starve the child inside me

Left alone in that bitter home

Verse 2

I carried their judgment like a curse

Pinned to my skin like a mark

Thought my face, my body, my reflection

Were the reasons I was left in the dark

It took a lifetime to understand

It never was about me

It was their brokenness, their shadows

Thrown like stones at a child

Who didn’t know how to dodge them

Didn’t know she wasn’t to blame

Chorus

But I’m digging through the ashes now

Trying to find what still can grow

Watering the roots they tried to kill

In the dark where no one goes

Water and sow the seeds of greatness

Even when the soil is cold

I won’t starve the child inside me

Left alone in that bitter home

Bridge

I’m not the names they carved into me

Not the lack they swore was mine

I’m the stubborn little sprout

That pushed up through the frost

And every time I choose to nurture

What they tried to tear apart

I reclaim the girl they buried

And I give her back her heart

Final Chorus

So I’m digging through the ashes now

Finding what still dares to grow

Watering the roots they poisoned

Till they rise and overflow

Water and sow the seeds of greatness

Even when the nights are long

I won’t starve the child inside me

Who deserved love all along

Water and sow the seeds of greatness

I’m finally growing where I belong
