Singled out as the bereaved
Chosen to bury
Chosen to mourn
Watch the flowers lose their leaves
Ears still ringing from the sound
Of happy music
Of cheering crowd
Forlorn, abandoned, glittery ground
Elated heart and smiling face
Once mistrusting
Once abused
Bitter tears witness fall from grace
Gentle warmth of love’s embrace
Pulsing hands, excited soul
Whispering heart of dreams to come
Now cold. Nothing fills the space.
Gaze lingering on the final page,
That book of truth
That pillar of hope
Now source of soul’s deep rage
Empty driveway where it was parked,
His car, his presence
His promise of love
Instead, torn heart, abandoned and marked
