when the dust has settled

I sift through the remaining rubble

searching for a keepsake

soon turned sour

rotten at its core

though I could only see

I think I catch a glimpse of a small bright piece

in the debris

I reach to grasp this token of nostalgia

and watch it disintegrate into grey smoke

soot and ashes are all that remain

of the piece of my heart

that you stole
