Something in the Air Is Poison

Breath it and we die

Something in the Air Is Poison

There’s something wrong,

In the night air,

Something sharp,

Something unseen.

It burns slow,

Inside the breath,

Curling deep,

Into the chest.

It twists thought,

Bends the mind,

Leaves you cold,

Leaves you faint.

People cough,

People stare,

Sensing danger,

Without a name.

It hangs heavy,

Over streets,

Over doors,

Over dreams.

Something toxic,

Something cruel,

Turns each inhale

Into fear.

No one speaks,

But everyone knows,

The air tonight

Is not our friend.

An exquisite personification of environmental dread, felt deep in the chest.
