Something about the way we’ve battled everytime...
By Sapphire Newton

From when we came from the trenches are wounds like pink slime
That gets deep at night but scorches in the ray of sunlight
Live under a lie or in a lie
Are Blackness could never lie
’My Melanie is not a crime’!
Bleakness in are eyes and faith in our hearts we sang
The look of hope against time
We rose and stayed strong in are battles everytime
My melanin tried to get diluted every night, is my colour a crime
With every blood sweat and tear we battled everytime
The struggle was real
But we blossomed with time
With targets on are backs and stuck in a cycle while are friend named pressure weighing down on are backs
So like preys we stay vigilant to keep in tact
But opposingly seen as the lions that roll in a pac
Are backs were built strong , elongated but taught to never crack
Mistake for attitude and talking back
Where we come from is intimidating
How we stayed strong in unhumanised habitats
But learning to adapt is what kept us in tact
We battled everytime
Hot summers were winters and winters were snowing, spring time crops were never growing
Just stuck in a field, where we'll cop the crop to get the cotton
They don’t know about going back to the basics
Where that meal came from - it was main tricks
Still we never fell
Going through hell
You could never tell
Cause when they say black doesn’t crack
I meant that you see the facts.
Not just my melanin that stayed perfect through hardship
But hearts never hardened
Still built to adapt
It’s not cliche that has us some type of way
But from a history taught to fight back
So my people we stand strong
And don’t let that fight get you down to long
Cause remember are roots were you came from
