At the bang of a gun

it's already too late

Someone's daughter, someone's son

*

Damage can't be undone

There's no respawn or replicate

at the bang of a gun

*

All it takes is one

Shot fired, why debate?

Someone's daughter, someone's son

*

Guilt is hard to outrun

when you play with fate

at the bang of a gun

*

When the deed is done

Driven by fear or hate

Somone's daughter, someone's son

*

Lives cut short, barely begun

it's necesssary to restate

at the bang of a gun

someone's daughter, someone's son

*

Thanks for reading!

The only thing the NRA will ever grieve more than the loss of a son or daughter is the right to own & pull that trigger. Okay, they probably grieve more for a whole lot of things than the loss of life.

  • Regardless of the complex structure required, this is such a great message. It reminds me of Johnny Cash's old song: 'Don't take your guns to town son Leave your guns at home, Bill Don't take your guns to town."

  • What they do to someone's son or daughter, someone will do to their son or daughter in the future. Loved your Villanelle! 🍩🥐

'Guilt is hard to out run when you play with fate at the bang of a gun' Whoa!!! That line got me. Well done!!!

You have made the rules of Villanelle sound so simple in your poem. I agree with Scott that it could very well become a song.

  • Good work! I just read the rules for Villanelle and that's quite a challenge! amazing work you created such a meaningful poem in that framework. I feel like this could be a Macklemore song.
