Sol Invictus

Particles of love.

By Lamar WigginsPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

before man gave meaning

to time and motion,

a large sphere constructing photons

vowed to forever shine with a

wealth of luminous diamonds.

streaking through vast reaches to

father a pale, blue dot...

he keeps a promise

fit for a king, tirelessly gifting

love in the form of

warmth — light — life.

never sleeping, only

watching with eyes

taught by eons

and tears that fill the oceans...

men see in color

and give names to emotions.

they watch flowers bloom

and rainbows command the sky.

they contemplate the morning mist

dissipating over still waters

as a shower of light gently

breaks the horizon,

dispersing atoms to play elsewhere...

but what man can't

truly see is this

grand paradise isn't

meant to last forever...

we tend to forget

that every flash of creation

ends in a flash of destruction.

a worry far off from here,

or is it?

fret not.

man will maintain

his curious quests

to witness the impossible,

fortifying lessons

only the stars can recite.

man, will continue to

revolve

and

evolve...

to a place called

tomorrow.

I love the "fathering a pale blue dot." I felt the love here. It feels like an ongoing lesson for the collective as man continues to evolve. Nice work, Lamar!

Love this, it feels optimistic, which is kinda healing for me because these days I tend towards pessimism. Also really like the “pale blue dot” line, I don’t know if it’s deliberate but the word choice reminds me of that monologue from Carl Sagan in the opening of the cosmos, and that put your whole poem in a really favorable light, for me, because he’s one of the philosophers I admire most. Your poem definitely does the “pale blue dot” monologue justice, great writing :)

I love the myth and grandeur that you evoke in your poem as well as the reminder that even though existence stretches across eons, it cannot enter the realm of forever. And what will man do with his invention of time? Will he write a different more hopeful ending or throw everything away? Beautiful and thought-provoking poetry, Lamar!

I guess that’s one way to write an ode to Big Bang and humanity :). Loved it!

Who knew the Sun's existential crisis would be more poetic than mine—and still ends by outshining us all?
