So you call yourself a writer

an ode to beginning again

So you call yourself a writer

and anyone can see

that writing is more than just for you or me

writing is like blood, effortlessly flowing

always knowing where it is going

only there is a hole

and it is flowing and spreading everywhere

you're unable to contain the thoughts and all the flair

so writing is more like breathing

something you don't think about

except when you notice your breath

you start to freak out

so writing is like the bicycle you haven't touched in years

waiting for you to start

and hoping it never ends

you sit down and decide to try

writing that is

please take a deep breath, don't hold it in

you start with a single sentence

so you call yourself a writer

The comparison to breathing is my favorite. I don’t believe writers ever stop. We’re writing long texts or emails or DMs to people we love, or reviews on Yelp and Goodreads. We’re writing in our heads when we go days without picking up a pen or typing out anything. It’s only when we think about it that we freak out, just like breathing.

It's the slower starts building to the cataclysm of thoughts that distract and alarm, and then the return to self. Wonderful!
