Snow Day

a whimsical poem about winter writing distractions

As the snow drifted like wind-blown cotton past her frosted window, the writer found herself captivated by the collaboration of each little flake to make such a beautiful, delicate and unique display.

The ability to find her words had been evasive all morning, but as she sat and studied the little flakes it soon became apparent where those words had gone.

A closer inspection of an individual flake pressed against the window revealed something astonishing.

Each flake was a word.

The first one she saw was 'captivated'. And that is exactly what she was.

She immediately rose from her chair, slipped on her boots, and grabbed her hat and coat, heading out without realizing the rest of her was still wearing pajamas.

Once outside the gathering of words began: as, cotton, past, wind-blown, delicate, drifted, unique.

It was when she found the word 'display' that awareness of her attire and a few gawking neighbors finally kicked in.
