Sinking

Free Verse

By Zakir UllahPublished 4 months ago 1 min read

My head slips beneath the surface,

but it is not water that drowns me—

it is thought.

Heavy thoughts,

dragging me down like stones tied to my chest.

I thrash against them,

arms flailing in silence no one hears.

Every memory pulls harder,

every mistake claws at my skin

like waves refusing to let me rise.

Bubbles escape my lips,

but they carry no air,

only whispers of prayers I never said out loud.

I reach for light—

that thin silver line above—

but it drifts further away,

mocking me with its distance.

And then,

somewhere deep,

in the quiet where even fear dissolves,

I learn something cruel:

you don’t always sink in oceans.

Sometimes you sink

inside yourself.
