Side of Town

Sometimes the past can be located on a map.

I often have the fleeting thought:

“A quick visit couldn’t hurt”.

I quickly remember that I am wrong, thankfully before any further damage is done.

It is unfair to myself to believe that maybe one day I will see things differently.

Every landmark gives me this broken feeling:

The taco place on the corner-

-The always-empty tattoo shop…

…the shitty apartments I lived in, and of course the heart of the neighborhood - the root of so much angst which holds memories of a time that is just so difficult to reflect upon.

I can’t even explain it to others who ask why I no longer come around…

Time has passed, and I’ve long since become a stranger to that side of town.

This is a poignant and beautifully written piece. You've captured the bittersweet nostalgia of revisiting old haunts, and the complex emotions that arise when confronting the past. The juxtaposition of the familiar and the foreign, the comfort and the pain, is skillfully portrayed. Your honest and vulnerable exploration of these feelings resonates deeply. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to acknowledge the past, even if it's painful. Thank you for sharing your heartfelt words.

  • This resonated so much - sometimes you just have to leave it all behind. No explanations are obligatory 💜C
