show me yours and I'll show you mine
your baggage
the odds and ends of past traumas
knick-knacks and what-ifs of bygone lovers
worn discarded razers that once drew blood
shoulda-coulda-didn't thingamajigs
socks with holes you keep
tucked in balls in the back
of your nightstand drawer behind the
self-help books
dig out your mother's let-me-down trinkets
place them out into the light
so I can see all that you hoard
near and dear yet unseen
the not-good-enough buttons from
your papa's favorite jacket
and the broken promise barrette from the
"BFF" bestie you occasionally try to find
on social media
show me the bits and bobs you do not
speak of but that lurk all around you
leaking from the seams
no matter how diligently you work to conceal
and contain or discard
(they always return, don't they?)
they linger
sabotaging new foundations
like the stench of mothballs
clinging to new garments long after
they are forgotten
show me all that you are
all the parts and mismatched pieces
the echos of past and present
hopes and failures
that beautiful stripped ugly mess that is
all of you
