She is a garden

Sprouting, growing, blooming

She is rising from the ground,

and everyday fighting off those who would come to feast on her

Every night, she keeps an eye open for the midnight monsters

Her roots lie safe under her abundance, humbling her with every breath she takes

She is rained upon, but she is stronger for it

She endures,

and with just a little bit of love and attention,

she is the most delicious thing you've ever seen

She is full grown now,

years of resilience and perseverance behind her

She is an apple, an orange, a lemon, a lime, a tomato, a head of lettuce, even a rose

She is everything you need

She is whole and beautiful

She is ready

So you walk up to her and with a sterling silver smile, cut off the most beautiful parts of her, taking them for yourself

All her value, her history and her life's work now in your hands

It's done

She's yours

And as you stand staring at her, making sure you've taken it all

She asks, "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

She is a garden.

I posted this piece a few months back, but in honour of International Women’s Day, I felt compelled to post it again! Today, I’m thinking of my mother, my grandmother’s, my aunts, my professors, my doctor, my cousins who are more like sisters, my best friends and all the other incredible woman who have added magic to my life. Their strength, resilience, intelligence, generosity, instincts and compassion keep me standing upright and moving forward. I thank and love them with all my heart.
