Think of all the bad things that happened to you today,
this week,
in the past month.
The world around us is unfair and unjust, essentially, it is unbalanced. It was not always this way.

Two sisters. They walked the world before we did, and every night they would stare into each other's eyes and see their own reflection. Yet since they were identical, in each other’s eyes they only saw the other. They never saw themselves.
And as they starred they sang. Their eerie voices swept the night sky, and their harmonies brought balance to the earth. The sun and moon danced to the sister’s incantation, and the world equilibrated.
And so everything existed in perfect synchrony for as long as the earth itself could remember.
The thing is, when two people are walking around all day, every day, for thousands of years, eventually they will end up as the sisters did, way up by the north of this globe, in one of those seasons where the sun never goes to sleep.
They waited for nightfall first. When the darkness didn’t come they searched for the moon. They found her overlooking a rippling pond, and began to sing.
As their voices soothed the earth, as the sun and moon danced, the pond grew calm and still.
The sisters starred back into the pond, seeing the other’s body in the same frame as their own. Two individuals. They stared into their own eyes in the water, till they were so captivated within themselves that as they stared back into each other’s eyes, they only saw themselves.
They became Esme and Lena, two separate entities. Needing release from the other to fully realize their own self.
Esme reached towards Lena, and slowly gave her an asphyxiating embrace, smothering her into her body. Lena meanwhile responded in a harmonic dance and dipped Esme under the pond’s surface, sinking with her.
They laid on the pond’s floor, in an embrace.
At first the world did not notice, or rather mind their absence. Yet slowly, over time, the moon began to miss dancing with the sun, and the night would pass and the world would not be restored, it started losing its balance.
And so we have been living in a world that lacks equilibrium ever since.

Although it is believed, and some would claim, if you find a pond way up north, stare into it, into yourself. Sing for the sun and the moon, and you may hear from the bottom of the water their ominous harmonies. Stare into yourself and they may appear in your own reflection.
