The broken vase leaked of used flower water,
As the roses and baby breath wilt in my arms.
The once red and white flowers,
Brown and dry,
Unlike my eyes.
I’ve never seen so much saltwater in my life,
Even fish would drown on the surface of my cheeks.
The old grandfather clock strikes 12,
As I sit beside you and your boyish charm.
You sleep soundly,
As if God himself sang you to sleep.
How could you?
But this poem is not about you,
Or you and I,
This poem is about me.
Yes,
Self-love is cliche,
But how could it not be?
Why is it so wrong to love yourself?
Call me egotistical,
Everyone does,
But people should fall in love with themselves…
Every smile reminds me of Christmas,
And who doesn’t love Christmas?
Laughter sounds of butterflies wings,
And eye crinkles look a lot like the very beams that hold this building up.
Long hair looks like a summer's sunset,
Stretch marks roar like tiger stripes,
Even noses make my day.
Imagine never smelling roses or cookies or even the rain ever again!
Do you still believe this is a cliche?
Voices make songs,
And fingers write stories,
Feet carry you from one love to another,
Mirrors, for as much as you say, are not your enemy,
You are.
So tell me you love yourself,
Or I might explode.
Think back to all your solo concerts and late night dance parties,
Think of you and your friends,
Think of all your A+’s and F’s,
Because without them you wouldn't be you.
So, tell what would you do,
What would you do if your friends comes to you saying:
“I’m sorry I hate myself, but I bet you do too,”
What is your next move?
Our society is dying,
On the brink of extinction,
So let's join hands and give each other the love we all deserve.
