A Forgiving Soul

Within the density of feral memories, light seeps through the forest roof

Sun piercing through thick, heavy firs, splattering spits of hope

Amidst a deliberate, mindful quest to heal on this lone hunt, I swear

Forgiveness is not instinctual to this wounded one, I remember, savour

Revenge is part of nature, a defence, my shield that warns others of red

Hurt perched on each shoulder, staring through unspoken glances, slices

Of hearts, innocence broken, embedded just under fragile dermal layers

I am never free

Walking through the steps of forgiving you is as if asking

The trapped rabbit to trust one more time, a mounted bucks head with

Eyeballs frozen over your bar, next to the scotch to give you another chance

To be human, to be good, for the hunt is not about the end, it is the trail,

The path we crossed, the path that made us seekers or the sought

I've yet to find forgiveness, walking sixty years and more, so far

Your imprint has remained fastened like the iron teeth on the rabbit's foot

Within my core, my hunt for a forgiving soul is yet to be found.

    Nice story

  • Congratulations on a beautifully written and poignant Top Story, Andrea. It's so true what's said here...the hunt for forgiveness is eternal. Perhaps we've to look at it in another way...not to condone...but to let go of what doesn't serve us. To put boundaries in place where they need to be...but not to resent.

blown away by this. "Walking through the steps of forgiving you is as if asking The trapped rabbit to trust one more time, a mounted bucks head with Eyeballs frozen over your bar, next to the scotch to give you another chance To be human, to be good" wow, wow, and double wow. This is beautifully articulated.

  • Back to say congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

The older I get, the more these reminiscents of a life well traveled ring true.

  • What an incredible take on this challenge and such an honest and transparent display...woohoo for getting top story on this one

Love the imagery here, feels like walking through pine trees after a misting. “Feral memories” is an incredible opening line.

That was deep and beautifully written! Sometimes forgiveness takes the scenic route, huh? Loved the imagery, it hit just right! 💖

  • "Your imprint has remained fastened like the iron teeth on the rabbit's foot" That was my most favourite line. Loved your poem!

To forgive is to be forgiven. or so they say. Revenge is bitter sweet. But it holds some satisfaction, just don't tempt the gallows. Deep poetry.

  • Vicious learning curve for those who have been preyed upon - they know the threat of being captured by those who instill trust before the attack. you really capture that trapped in time feeling from wounds and threats... that seem to forever limit freedom. So glad you find one version of freedom in your writing... all the sweeter because it is yours to do with as you please.

Those trapped rabbit/mounted buck stanzas wee so evocative. Well done!
