Season Sensations

What Brings Back the Memories

By Madison "Maddy" NewtonPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read
The Great Sacandaga Lake at sunset.

The warmth of a melting sun on the mountains,

the icy touch of an early morning swim,

the caress of butterflies carried on a gentle breeze,

and the chill of riding over white cap waves.

Summer is the salt of a tear on a happy sun-kissed cheek,

the sweet taste of juicy watermelon dripping from teeth;

it's the smell of sunscreen and campfires, peaches and wet dogs,

it's the feeling of carefree bliss wrapped in firework blankets.

***

The crispness of apple-stained air,

the gooiness of caramel and pumpkin guts,

the twisted smile of a crackling Jack o' Lantern,

and the straight edges of sugar maple leaves and turkey feathers.

Autumn is the flannel patches on a weather-beaten scarecrow,

the spicy prickle up a child's nose at the sniff of a candle;

it's the bump of beeswax, the playful caw of crows,

it's the cheeriness of orange forests and corn husk rows.

***

The sparkle of newly fallen snow and glistening tinsel,

the dark of a hemlock grove hiding quiet snowflake-dusted deer,

the delightful pitter patter of liquidy icicles,

and the troubled looks of mischievous children afraid of getting coal.

Winter is the soft chime of sleigh bells,

the twinkle of lights against the swirl of December sky;

it's the thrill of Christmas morning, the smell of chocolatey cookies,

it's the promise of a New Year ripe with possibility.

***

The muddiness of a pebble bottom puddle,

the cleanliness of fresh linen and dandelion seed swept away,

the dampness of a frog pond and the slimy backs of salamanders,

the dryness of pressed tulip and daffodil between parchment pages.

Spring is the fervor of a sleepy world awakening,

the uproar of a buzzing meadow and babbling brook;

it's the hunt for eggs, the scent of healthy churned up dirt,

it's the hope of new beginnings and a fun-filled summer.
