Scorched

Written for The Last Flame

The lamp flickers its eerie glow

Faux flames dance in the darkness

The city streets fade into the background

As the earth crumbles beneath tired feet

***

The day; long and cold

Steals the warmth from lost souls

Wandering aimlessly between empty buildings

Long forgotten; abused by time

***

Set a match

Burn the memories down

The door has closed; collapsed

The weight of the end draws near

***

The smoke billows on the horizon

The wind whips the flames

He stands on the last page

His fate; mere words away

***

Four books into the series

He was the hero, the ruler of the land

Now everything is burning down

His lungs scorched by the flames

***

How could she destroy him?

With a few hundred words to go

The protagonist's fate hangs in the balance

As the fire destroys the imaginary lines

***

His last breath fades into the page

His fate is nothing more

Than flames and ash

Til he is taken into the void
