School Girl musings
On the school bus
I’m sitting here,
Remembering the creek behind my
First real Childhood home(own room, large hill to roll down with my sisters in our tricycles)
That creek, where we’d go as kids—-everyone
All the neighborhood kids,
And play like there was a mansion
And something really cool
And magical,
But, it was
Just a few boards and a piece of rope.
I remember I’d ride my bike all over the place,
Challenging boys to race me
Without worry that I was a girl.
I remember
How I would dream of my crush from
School on the school bus—- closing my eyes to
Imagine
His blonde hair and blue eyes, and imagine
Holding hands with him forever.
I remember how I wanted my
Father to wave to me one
Last time as I got on the bus to school
From the house window adjacent to the bus,
But he wasn’t there, and I was upset.
Everyone on the bus helped me feel better.
I remember coming home from the bus and making dinner for everyone,
Because I wanted to make
The food I liked,
And I really felt grown up using the stove.
I remember making up stories to write about in school about the huge field next to my house, on the school bus,
And my teacher wondering if it was true or not——because it was too fantastical to be true.
But, the school bus
Feels like
A lot of people and
A lot of
Things
To me,
And I can’t just explain it,
In one verse.
