“Save the sea turtles”

Translated by a consumer?

By Kiersten NolanPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Not a sea turtle.

It started a long time ago.

The oceans are trashed

This we know.

Sea turtles are dying

Birds aren’t flying.

I do my best

To limit consumption

“Save the sea turtles”

My literal,

spoken.

slogan.

Every time I do consume,

The cashier replies

“Well you can just cut the handles”

No plastic bag please

Handles or none,

They still end up in the ocean.

Obey and consume

The infamous “they”

That’s what they say.

“You need this or that”

Why?

It all ends up in the trash!

From oceans and dumps,

To outer space.

Satellites circle the earth

Why?

So we can see our face,

From outer space?

It’s no wonder, the ozone

Is suffocating.

Electric cars

To fix the problem!

But to mine those batteries,

And dispose of them,

Takes even more energy

Blood, sweat and tears

It’s ourselves we condemn,

Ultimately, in the end.

So how do I

Reduce my footprint?

I’m just one person

As they pave the roads

With cement,

Wishful content

Recycled plastic

Should be used instead

But where does our recycling

Really go?

Does anyone even know?

Can we believe what we’re told?

Maybe so.

Maybe together

We can leave

Behind footprints

As we tour the ocean

Footprints

That get erased

Instead of omissions

Make it our mission

To limit consumption.

I do my best

But again,

I’m only one person
