Sandhill Cranes

Wings ‘whooshing’ in the sky

By Chris SienerPublished 5 years ago Updated 4 years ago 1 min read
Jasper Pulaski Wildlife Refuge, north central Indiana USA

In a tree stand

at a wildlife sanctuary

viewing Sandhill Cranes

in Gods gifted aviary

.

And if you’re close

enough, as was I

you can hear their wings

‘whooshing’ in the sky

.

The blended symphony of

bumblebees and rustling leaves

A multiplication of each crane

flapping, in formation

.

They fly as a community

a sight of beauty

A display of precision

as if, without decision

.

The orchestra of trumpet calls

often heard during flight

help keep the cranes together

and their formation tight

.

Their V-shaped formation

and thermals they ride

may help carry them 300 miles

to a new lakeside

.

Where the adult pairs

will display their sun-dance

Courting with outstretched wings

leaps, bows and a prance

Perhaps we have something to

learn from these Sandhill Cranes?
