Salty Breaths

submerge my existence

spinning in slow motion

afflicted by my own perception

ankle deep in ocean

I am alive as

the water is cold

waves crash against my chest

the salt itself

trying it’s best

to grab open air

if only to breathe

both of us

gasping for oxygen

in frigid sea

I close my eyes

and quiet my mind

for what feels like

the last time

arms spread

I fall back and

submerge my existence

drift to open waters

pity sinks

along with me

continue to struggle

for my last breath

tied with the feeling

of no hope left

is when

you look out

to see me surface

like a spring whale

taking my very first breath

to breathe
