Salt

useful and corrosive

Everyone seems to be made of sugar and spice.

Except me.

I am made of salt.

You put me in everything,

But you’re careful to just use a dash.

My dependability, my humor, and my friendliness.

Cause you don’t want too much or the whole dish is trash.

And the taste will be overpowering, maybe even suffocating.

Like my clinginess, my quirks, and my unsteadiness.

Dip your finger in before you’re done plating.

I damn sure know how to ruin a good time.

You know if you didn’t have me, things would be just fine.

The line is so thin between a good dose..

..And too much, where I just impose.

You love to toss a little into your bath.

But I’ve been known to erode everything in my path.

Soak peacefully as I help relax your muscles,

I’ll hold you up to float baby, forget all your troubles.

I'll even work my hardest to pull out those toxins,

While you remind me that you have better options.

I wear myself down for you until I evanesce.

And you talk to me like I’m an added stress.

Toss me around because it’s freezing outside.

Being stomped on is a small downside,

If it means I get to protect you.

Once you get inside safe, you kick me off your shoe.

You make sure to mention that you see me as an eyesore.

And how you wish I wasn’t around anymore.

But for you I'll lay alone, jaw clenched, taking in the ice.

While you sit by the fire with someone made of sugar or spice.

The next day, the sun shines, and the grounds barely slick.

But it was me working all night, refusing something that could harm you to stick.

And again, you crush me into pieces beneath your feet,

While you talk about how dirty and ugly I make the concrete.

But I'm just happy to be that close to you,

Even if all I get is the bottom of your shoe.

Everyone seems to be made of sugar and spice.

Except me

I am made of salt.

And I’m damn good at ruining things,

So, you remind me again why you took back that ring.

I confuse my low cost and usefulness with admiration.

What I thought was love has always just been exploitation.

No way - salt is awesome, IMO. BUT, I so love how you weaved everything about salt so beautifully into this poem. Well done!
