Sacred Siesta

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 years ago 1 min read
Vincent Van Gogh, "The Siesta," 1889-1890

Do not mistake resting for laziness

A human being is no mere machine

Given contemporary craziness

From peaceful repose, we have much to glean

There are those who shout that constant labor

Is a clear sign of moral fortitude

They ought to respect their sleeping neighbor

And abandon their foolish attitude

Acknowledging the real needs of the flesh

Is neither a sin nor an awful crime

Having rested, we rise renewed and fresh

The better to use our limited time

Let the sun bless your idle, dreaming face

Like it, rise and set with natural grace

Ekphrastic
