Roses Are Other Colors, Too

a response to a cliché

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Sugar is sweet,

And so are you.

-a love poem we should all know

Roses are blue,

and yellow,

and black,

and white,

and just about

any color you can

think of.

*

Violets can be

these colors,

too.

*

As for being

compared to sugar,

it gets a bit complicated.

You see…

Sometimes,

it’s bitter.

Other times,

it’s sweet.

And half of the time,

it’s too much for

anyone to take.

*

And me?

Well, I have my

good days,

and I have my

bad days.

I have my

quiet days,

I have my

chaotic days.

I am not just

sweet.

No, I’m flawed, too.

And I wouldn’t

change a thing

about that.

You know, this made me think. Who the hell came up with the meanings for each colour of the roses? Like why did everyone decide to follow that? What if I wanna give someone a blue rose just because it's their favourite colour? But thanks to these so called meanings, they'd think I'm being mysterious or hiding something, lol Anyway, sorry for my rant. Loved your poem!

I love the realistic view of both flowers and humans in this piece. Well written.
