Rising Sun

Should it rise on a world without me...

If tomorrow starts without me,

Who will notice?

Who will stand by my graveside,

Who will weep?

Faces flash through my mind,

So fast as to be unseen,

Leaving me blind

To all but the warmth of their love.

Friends,

Family,

Near,

Far,

Will they notice?

Will they care?

They will.

-0-

If tomorrow starts without me,

What will be the result?

If tomorrow starts without me,

Will the sun still rise?

History began on the same day as I,

Time started with the opening of my eye.

But there was a world before,

There will be a world after.

-0-

If tomorrow starts without me,

How will I be remembered?

If the sun rises,

If day turns to night,

The first time in forever that I will not,

Be able to enjoy the sight.

What will they say about me?

Will a glass be raised to me under a moon so bright?

If tomorrow starts but I am not here to see it,

Who will cry?

Who will watch the birds as they fly,

Watch them take wing and remember me?

A curious thing,

That question

A world in which I take action,

Gone in an instant,

The world as it was before me,

Returned if tomorrow starts without me.

-0-

Will they weep?

When the sun rises and I do not?

Will they remember the laughs we shared?

If, when that first day ends,

They watch the stars come out

Shining in a sky I cannot see,

Will they regret the things they never dared

To say?

If tomorrow starts without me...

-0-

If tomorrow starts without me,

History will unfold,

As it has ever done.

But a hole will remain behind,

A place where I once had stood.

Big

Or

Small.

A question that lingers in my mind.

Wondering what they would

Do in a world where I can no longer smile.

Where the only thing left

Is the memory.

The abandoned hope of who I could be

After tomorrow starts without me.

The above poem was written for Kayleigh Fraser's super fun "One of Us" prompt.

I might try again, but for now I think this is enough existential dread XD

Thank you so much Kayleigh! This was a fun prompt and I hope to return to it soon!

I will stand there and weep. I will also be far from alone.
