Reunion

written on the way back

On my way to the ex-work reunion,

I stopped by Wegmans off Waxpool.

Wandering the aisles for thirty minutes,

Grinning with idiotic happiness,

I remembered the good old days,

When we thought we were changing the world—

And we did, but failed

To change with it.

I gawked at the steaks,

Got lost in the cheese aisle’s abundance,

But then came thoughts:

Cholesterol,

Constipation,

Cancer.

I placed in my cart three bananas,

A bunch of celery,

A bag of frozen veggies,

And headed to the checkout.

But then I paused—

Have we become

Just mere memories of ourselves?

I turned around,

Picked up a New York strip,

Three kinds of cheese,

Two bottles of wine,

And drove past the overgrown lot

Where our campus used to be.

Then, with a sigh and a smile,

I went to the reunion.
