Returning Home
A poem dedicated to the potent comforts of home after a long day.

Returning home with
Pavement beaten feet,
Sinking into soft carpet
At last
Like sand between your toes without the gritty mess.
Smoothly submerging,
Luxuriantly pacing,
A fresh pair of new socks sliding on smoothly.
The laying down of a heavy handbag,
Wherever it might land.
The cushions calling out your name,
As a wheezing whisper
As your weight lazily compresses them.
The smooth unclipping of a bra,
The serpent biting you all day collapsing,
Like the snake has shed its skin
And now you discard it in the wash basket.
A steaming cup of anything is solace to my hands,
That cradle it contentedly ,
And let the steam rush up to stroke my face
Before I even take a sip
Of fragrant tea,
Or cocoa clinging to my tongue
With lingering sweetness.
A bath the deepest solace to my body,
My joints unwinding and decompressing
like a bunched up scarf submerged
In the water and suds
That now serve to cloak me
and stroke me.
A book clutched high
to keep it dry,
The knowing when I leave and collapse upon fresh sheets,
My feline friend
Will seek my company
With many a complaint I did not go to him myself.
His fur vibrating and whirring
Surrounded by softness at last.
