Remember the Day You Won First Prize

Remember the day you won first prize

grinning like mad with those wide bright eyes

holding that ribbon like it meant the world

while I stood nearby, hair freshly curled

You thought that moment was hard to beat

till you turned and saw me, head to feet

hands a bit shaky, trying to stay cool

you looked like a lad fresh out of school

We said “I do” with the sun coming through

your tie was wonky, your smile was true

I still see it clear, even now and then

you looked like you’d struck gold again

Not in coins, not medals or fame

just something you couldn’t quite name

me, in white, biting back a grin

thinking, he’s mine — let’s begin

You won a prize

I won a life

you reached for my hand

and called me wife
