Regret

the love that steals away

It didn't have to end like this

You didn't have to go

While you’ve wandered through my mind

I truly didn't know

-------

That you have loved the depth of me

Yet hid me in your heart

You longed to have my love returned

And prayed our tale could start

-------

I wish I'd understood your love

And nestled in its glow

Had felt the flame that burned in you

And held you soft but, no,

-------

The burning embers in your touch

Were cooled by ill-picked words

You built a home within your heart

That I did not deserve

-------

I turned my longing far from you

And left you there, heart-sore

And now I pray for friendship lost

I wish I'd loved you more.

What a tale of regret. This poem had a neat structure of rhymme that created distinct breaths of thought
