Ode To Recovery

September 26 is my recovery birthday

It means I have not found it necessary

to drink alcohol or take illicit drugs on that day

and on all the days before since my recovery

began in September of 1980, when I made the discovery

that I needed to stop drinking and using drugs.

~

Recovery month is a good reminder to give hugs

and don't take drugs. Drink water not alcohol

I would not have lived this long if I wouldn't have stopped

and others will not live long as they will fall

with drugs and alcohol, their time will be chopped

off and they will go into the pits of an early death

~

In recovery, it is important to remember to take a breath

inhale in all the good stuff, keep a positive attitude

our addiction demands we stay negative, have gratitude

Recovery is fixing up what went wrong, having fun

more fun than I thought it would be Hon

I never believed I would make thirty

~

This year I turned seventy

I still have some black hair mixed with the grey

and I am a walking talking miracle some say

Recovery isn't always easy, but I would take any day

in recovery to the days of using alcohol and drugs.

~

I love everyone and I learned to give hugs

in recovery, and to stop taking drugs.

Loved ones we can pray for and get help for ourselves

and help others and we can celebrate recovery for all

What a great discovery! Recovery is not always a ball!

~

Life happens but with the support of recovering people

we can make it through everything that comes along

Some people in recovery find support under a steeple

Others find support in the culture and that isn't wrong

Still, others find their recovery in a 12-step meeting

There are other ways too, and let's start with a greeting.

I asked my husband if he wanted to say something about recovery and here is his ode:

Recovery

What a discovery

Can't beat it

It's the best fit

for me

Others can see

How happy I can be

Skipping through life

With my old wife

Life has brought me alongside first-degree relatives who suffered, and I've held their hands. One day, they may rise me up too. Very strong story and I wish you all the best.
